LADAKH OVERVIEW

LADAKH is a mountain kingdom which lies along the western end of the Tibetan Plateau in the northernmost part of India. Its altitude ranges from 9000 ft (2,750 metres) high to 25,170 ft.(7,672 metres) at SASER KANGRI in the Karakoram Range. Most of the Ladakh region is cluttered with remote villages at altitudes of 14,000 feet or higher connecting high altitude passes at 16,000 feet to 19,000 ft.

Since LADAKH is located at an high altitude, the winter temperatures in many regions dip to – 40 deg.C and lower. Summer are usually warm at about 33 deg C, but the region experiences intense heat during day time.

By road, LADAKH is approachable from the western side by the Srinagar – Leh Highway & from the southern side by the Manali – Leh Highway. Both these mega highways remain closed between November to May, due to heavy snowfalls blocking the ZOJILA pass on the Srinagar Leh Highway & the Rohtang and Baralacha Pass on the Manali Leh Highway. By Air, Ladakh remain accessible throughout the year.

The name “LADAKH” emerges from the Tibetan word “La-tags” which means, “the land of the la’s OR the land of the “passes”.

The enormous mass of the Himalayas creates a rain shadow, obstructing the entry of the moisture laden clouds of the Indian monsoon. LADAKH is thus, a high altitude desert. The main source of water is the melting snow from the mountains. The regions on the norther side of the Himalayas like DRASS, ZANSKAR & the SURU valley do however, experience heavy snowfall and remain virtually cut off from the rest of the country for several months in a year. Although summers are short, they are good enough to grow crops. Due to high altitude, there is a lack of vegetation & adequate proportion of oxygen.

LADAKH CLIMATE

The climate in the LADAKH region is that of a snow desert with long and harsh winters from October to early March regulating the minimum temperatures well below the freezing point for most of the winter period. LEH city experiences occasional snowfall during winter. The weather in the remaining months is usually fine and warm during the day.

RAINFALL

Since the LADAKH region starting from ZOJILA on the Srinagar side & the BARALACHA pass from the Manali side falls in the rain shadow region, Ladakh experiences very scanty to negligible rainfall. The average annual rainfall is only 90 mm (3 ½ inches) and temperatures can range from -28 deg.C in winter to 33 deg.C in summer. In the year 2010, the city experienced flash floods which claimed the lives of more than 100 people

POPULATION

A majority of the population live in rural areas, which are accessible by foot. Population estimates as low as 115,000 and as high as 250,000 have been given depending on how LADAKH is defined. Many sources consider only the “LEH district” to be Ladakh.

LIFE IN LADAKH

About 2 decades ago in 2000, when I first visited Ladakh, a majority of the tourists were adventure seeking foreigners with a very minor percentage of Indian tourists. However, after the release of the mega buster movie “3 Idiots” in 2009, tourists have started flocking in Leh throughout the year, irrespective of the seasons.

Travel & Tourism being the main business governing the local economy, Ladakh region has started seeing an increased influx of tourists. Tourism has scaled multifold horizons & Leh has seen a stupendous increase in the inflow of Indian tourists. Secondly, being directly connected to major cities in India by Air, Ladakh has become the most sought after destination for nature & adventure lovers. At one point of time, Ladakh was only perceived as an adventurer’s paradise. Now the whole of Ladakh region has become a family destination, honeymooners paradise & an adventure lovers home.

It is said that your life is divided into 2 parts. One, before you visited Kashmir & the other, after your visit. Ladakh region of the great J & K state is an ultimate dream destination & the most cherished dream of any traveler. It’s a pleasure cum adventure trip with lots of thrills in store & a very harsh climate to endure. Believe me, the nights can be chilly enough for you to pull over a couple of blankets & the days can be hot enough to give you a sunstroke. Yes, this is LADAKH, a HIGH ALTITUDE DESERT…
